2013 News

Tappie Bothy Overnighter 08/11/13.

We had 7 Scouts down on the Friday night with 6 sleeping in hike tents. Also present were 4 Young Leaders and 6 Older Leaders.

The Scouts all got another tick in the box for their Zodiac Award and an extra tick as the temperature fell below ZERO - yes, winter is on its way!

We witnessed a great sunset and sunrise that weekend with plenty of bird life on show - we even saw an otter.

Thanks to all those concerned for a great time.

Cycle Camp 2013 @ Shanry Farm , Friday 27th to Sunday 29th September

This year’s cycle camp was organised by Paul Turner. We even had dry weather. ! 10 Scouts and 5 leaders took part.

Friday night saw us putting up all the tents the dinning shelter and making for the first time Goats Cheese. On Saturday we cycled from 10am to 4.30pm.
Our route this year took us off the Rait road and onto farm and estate tracks some of which were very steep and loose. About midway through the route we found ourselves on top of Dunsinnan Hill. Dave explained the relevance of Dunsinnan Hill in Shakespeare’s play MacBeth. Three of the older Scouts took their bikes to the top in order to make the steep descent back down to the road.

The Scouts were later tested on their CPR skill by Dave’s simulated crashes.

Once back at camp the evening meal of Hairy Bikers Sausage Casserole followed by Apple Pie & Custard was prepared. The four older Scouts went for an hour night cycle with Simon & Peter. The remaining Scouts organised two sketches for the camp fire. After a brief night hike up the local hill the campfire was held with the usual songs and sketches performed, some of which were led by the older Scouts.

After a hearty breakfast on Sunday morning, which included toasted sunflower seeds, the gear was all packed away. Thereafter the Scouts rode back to Scone escorted by Paul & Simon. Thanks to all the leaders team who took part in the event and also for the preparation on Thursday night.

SUMMER CAMP at DRIMMIE 2013

Firstly a big thanks again to all the Leaders & Young Leaders from both Scone and West Carse Troops who attended the camp or helped out beforehand. All your hard work made the camp run smoothly and brought a lot of enjoyment to the Scouts.

Thanks also to Ralph Powell for once again providing a large trailer for transporting the gear to camp and back to Scone again.

Thankfully the whole of summer camp this year was dry from start to finish. It made a change not having to dry out everything out for days after the camp. !!!
Lots of sunblock and caps prevented anyone being sunburnt.

Bringing forward the camp to the beginning of July greatly boosted the number of Scone Leaders / Young Leaders in attendance.
At times the combined total with West Carse Leaders was 15.

10 Scone Scouts (2 patrols ; Merlins & Swifts) & 5 West Carse Scouts (1 patrol ; Saints) camped this year
For 3 of the Scouts this was their first proper Scout camp.

Over the long weekend the camp programme included the following activities :

Morning Inspections (tent and kitchen areas), Football (inter patrol competition), Volleyball (inter patrol competition), Quoits (individual competition)
Backwoods cooking, Blindfold Trail (wet as usual !), Target Shooting, Trading Post, Highland Games, Swimming (once on Saturday , twice on Sunday and once on Monday), Cooking Competition : Main Course = Chicken & Trimmings , Dessert = Jelly Trifle & Trimmings) and Camp Fire (numerous songs and sketches)

2 young Scouts (Matthey Carter & Jack Ritchie) were officially invested at the start of the camp fire.

The trophies where awarded as follows before leaving for home on Monday night :

Colin Paterson Trophy (for overall camp winners) = Swifts

Gilmore Dow Trophy (for all sports) = Swifts

Inspection Trophy (for all morning inspections) = Saints

Cooking Competition Trophy = Saints

In summary : Great Campsite , Great Weather , Great Company , Good Times & Happy Memories

March

Dave booked Boddin Bothy for the Scouts : Friday 15th to Sunday 17th March - Boddin village is very near near Montrose. It’s a lovely location as you can see and yes, it is the one with the roof on! The leaders visited the venue to check the route recently, it's 47 miles from Scone and took about 1hr and15 mins from Scone.

February

Many thanks to Dave Shackles for organising the Tappie Bothy visit on the 9th of Feb - as you can see from the pictures his cooking was acceptable and the boys helped to make, and then enjoyed an excellent Chinese feast for the New Year!

Our recent Burns Supper was a great success, although a snooze appears to have been required for a few of the Young Leaders!

We finished our group activities for 2012 with a swim at Blairgowrie, anda wet and wild session at Glenalmond College learning the basics of Water Polo - a fabulous time was had by all and the sheer energy and vocal enthusiasm of the boys and watching parents almost raised the roof at one point - big thanks to all involved in the organising here!
